Why Grandparent Wellness Matters—The Power of Staying Healthy for the Moments That Count

How One Night With My Grandkids Reminded Me That Wellness is the Greatest Gift

The Unexpected Workout

I’ve been a little quiet online lately, and there’s a very adorable reason why: my grandkids came to stay overnight. And let me tell you, it was an experience that left me both full of love… and completely wiped out!
I thought I was active. I thought I was fit. I lead fitness classes, eat well, and prioritize my wellbeing. But having two little ones in my care overnight brought a whole new definition to “functional fitness.”
We were up half the night. And when morning came, it was non-stop: breakfast, playtime, cleaning, snacks, nappies, calming tantrums, giggles, cuddles—you name it. On top of all that, I still had a bit of work to do from home. I had help, and I was still struggling!

The Joy and the Chaos

But amidst the chaos, there were these beautiful moments that reminded me why it’s all worth it. Grandchildren bring so much joy. They pull you into the present moment. Their laughter can lift your spirit and make your own worries fade. In many ways, they are little healers.

They help you forget about your own problems, even if just for a little while. You realise that being around them is a reminder of life’s simple pleasures. But the energy it takes to truly enjoy those moments is real. And this experience gave me a renewed respect for every parent doing this full-time.

One of the best surprises? My grandson loves green smoothies! He happily sipped on the same nutritious blend I make for myself. It felt so special to share that healthy habit with him—and to know I’m planting little wellness seeds for the future.

Why Wellness is the Real Superpower

Here’s the truth: to truly enjoy our loved ones, especially the little ones, we have to be in a good place with our health. Wellness isn’t just about what we look like or the number on a scale. It’s about having the energy, stamina, and mental clarity to be present, patient, and joyful in the moments that matter.

It’s also about building mental resilience. There was a moment when I felt myself getting aggy—my grandson was throwing his toys out for the tenth time and I was tempted to raise my voice. But I caught myself. I took a breath and reminded myself: this is part of the duty. This is part of the beauty of caregiving. And that’s when the mental fitness side of wellbeing really clicked in.

That’s when it hit me—this is exactly why I do what I do. Why I eat clean. Why I move every day. Why I stay hydrated, practice mindfulness, and nourish my body and mind. Because life doesn’t slow down. It gives us more to love, more to experience, and more reasons to take care of ourselves.

A Whole New Level of Respect

To all the parents of young children: I see you. You are doing an incredible job. I honestly take my hat off to you. For the first time, I truly understand the saying, “I love my grandkids because I can give them back!” 😅

You juggle schedules, needs, emotions, meals, school runs, and your own dreams—often on very little sleep. You are superheroes in disguise. And whether you’re a parent, grandparent, or caregiver, your health and wellbeing aren’t luxuries—they are essential.

The Takeaway: Prioritise Your Wellbeing Now

This little adventure with my grandkids reminded me that taking care of our health is an act of love. It means showing up with energy, being able to bend down to tie shoelaces, run after scooters, lift little ones into car seats, or even stay calm through a toddler meltdown.

So here’s your gentle reminder: your health matters. Whether it’s to run a business, care for family, chase after grandkids, or simply enjoy your life—invest in your wellbeing. It really is the best gift you can give yourself… and the people you love.

Until next time, I’ll be over here recovering with a green smoothie in hand (and maybe sharing one with my grandson), heart full of gratitude. ❤️
